UAB Dental Interview at a Glance

Every line is labelled by how well supported it is: stated by the school, reported by applicants, or an Intervly estimate based on what comparable programmes do. Estimates give you a realistic baseline to prepare against, and your invitation email is always the final word.

Traditional interview, not MMI

UAB does not publish its interview structure. Applicant reports and third-party admissions guides consistently describe a conversational faculty interview rather than a multiple mini interview circuit.

What to Expect in the UAB Dental Interview

UAB is Alabama's only dental school, and that shapes the interview more than anything else. The school states that preference is given to bona fide residents of Alabama, while still considering strong applicants from every state, and reports that roughly 30% of an incoming class is from out of state. Expect at least part of your conversation to circle back to your connection to Alabama and where you intend to practice, whether you grew up in the state or not.

The interview is one component of an explicitly holistic file. UAB states that its admissions committee weighs letters of recommendation, the personal statement, the interview, general dentistry shadowing, community service, student involvement, and other experiences alongside academics. In practice that means interviewers are testing whether the person in the room matches the application on paper, so the strongest preparation is being able to talk in detail about anything you claimed in AADSAS.

Applicants commonly describe the UAB interview as a traditional, conversational faculty interview rather than a timed MMI circuit. Questions tend to be personal and motivational, such as why dentistry, why UAB, strengths and weaknesses, teamwork and leadership, and how you handle failure, with the occasional lighter or unexpected question to see how you think on your feet. UAB does not publish the format, so treat these as applicant reports and confirm details in your invitation.

Timing matters. UAB closes AADSAS submissions on October 31 and holds its offer day on December 15, so interviews sit inside a compressed window and a class largely fills at once. If you are interviewing, you are already academically competitive: the average admitted applicant is around a 3.78 overall GPA, a 3.72 science GPA, and roughly a 21 DAT academic average. The interview is where the committee separates similar files.

Name a genuine failure, what it cost, and the specific habit you changed afterwards.

  • Teamwork and conflict2 of 17 questions (12%)+6 pts vs. average

Prepare a real disagreement you handled, not a story where everyone agreed with you in the end.

  • Academics and study habits1 of 17 questions (6%)+3 pts vs. average

Be ready to account for any dip in your record and describe how you study now, concretely.

  • Career goals1 of 17 questions (6%)

  • Ethics and professionalism1 of 17 questions (6%)

Work through scenarios out loud: name the issue, weigh the people affected, then commit to a proportionate action.

What UAB Raters Look For

Ordered by what the 17 UAB questions in the Intervly bank actually cover: personal background and story, self-awareness and failure and teamwork and conflict carry the most weight here.

01

Self-awareness

Strengths and weaknesses, what you dislike about yourself, and how you responded to a meaningful failure all appear in UAB's question set. The committee is looking for a candid, specific answer with evidence that you acted on it.

02

Teamwork and leadership

Questions about the role you take in a team and how you handle disagreement as a leader are common. Dental school is four years of shared clinics and group work, so concrete examples land better than adjectives.

03

Motivation for dentistry

Expect direct questions on why dentistry rather than another health profession. Ground the answer in specific shadowing, patient interaction, or hands-on experience instead of general statements about liking science and people.

04

Ethics and professionalism

Intervly's UAB question bank includes ethics scenarios such as how you would respond to unethical behavior in a dental practice. Practice reasoning out loud: identify the issue, weigh the patient's interest, and describe a proportionate action rather than jumping to an extreme.

05

Manual precision under pressure

At least one question in the UAB bank asks about being extremely precise under time pressure. Any credible example works, from lab work to art to sport, as long as you explain how you managed the pressure.

06

Communication

UAB explicitly names proficiency in communication as part of preparing for the study of dentistry. Pace, structure, and warmth are being assessed continuously, not in a single question.

07

Ties to Alabama and access to care

As the state's only dental school with a stated preference for Alabama residents, UAB has a clear interest in who will serve Alabama communities. Be ready to speak honestly about your connection to the state, your exposure to rural or underserved populations, and where you see yourself practicing.

08

Knowledge of the school

A why-UAB question is one of the most reliably reported parts of this interview. Generic answers about reputation are easy to spot; specific answers about the curriculum, patient population, or programs are not.

05Why Intervly feels real

Your Interviewer Won't Just Ask the Next Question

Intervly listens to what you actually say and generates contextual follow-ups. That is exactly what a conversational UAB interview does to unprepared answers.

Interviewer

Why are you interested in attending UAB School of Dentistry?

Applicant

One reason I'm interested in UAB is the opportunity to serve patients throughout Alabama. I grew up in a rural community myself.

Intervly follow-up

You mentioned growing up in a rural community. How did that experience shape the way you think about access to dental care?

06Preparation

How to Prepare for the UAB Dental Interview

  1. 01

Have a real answer on Alabama

UAB gives preference to Alabama residents and trains dentists for the state. Whether you are in state or out of state, prepare a specific, honest answer about your ties to Alabama and your willingness to practice there. Vague enthusiasm is the weakest possible response to this question at this school.

  2. 02

    Research UAB beyond the homepage

Read the D.M.D. admissions and FAQ pages, then look at the pathway programs UAB promotes, including the Rural Dental Scholar Program, the Early Dental School Acceptance Program, and Blaze to D.M.D. Knowing what these are, and which one connects to your goals, signals genuine interest.

  3. 03

    Know your own application cold

UAB describes a holistic review that includes your letters, personal statement, shadowing, service, and involvement. Reread your AADSAS application the night before and be able to expand on every experience in a sentence or two.

  4. 04

    Prepare stories, not scripts

The reported UAB questions are personal: failure, teamwork, conflict, hobbies, even your favorite national park. Prepare six or seven stories you can adapt rather than memorizing answers to a fixed list, so an unexpected question does not knock you off balance.

  5. 05

Practice answering out loud, with follow-ups

A conversational interview means the second question depends on your first answer. Practicing silently hides pacing and filler-word problems. Intervly's AI mock interview listens to your spoken answer and asks a real follow-up based on what you actually said.

07Research

What to Know Before Your UAB Dental Interview

Use these as starting points. The answer to "why this school" has to be yours, so we deliberately do not write it for you.

Alabama's only dental school

UAB SOD is the state's single dental school and states a preference for Alabama residents. Understand what that public mission means for the patients you would treat and the state's workforce needs.

Rural and pathway programs

UAB promotes the Rural Dental Scholar Program, the Early Dental School Acceptance Program, the Board of Dental Scholarships, and Blaze to D.M.D. Look up what each one does and decide which genuinely aligns with your background.

The academic health center setting

The school sits on the UAB Health Sciences campus in Birmingham alongside medicine, nursing, public health, and a large academic medical center. Consider what interprofessional training and a large referral population would add to your education.

Clinical training and patient population

Look at how UAB structures clinic years, what community and outreach clinics students rotate through, and the kind of patients you would see. Specific curriculum details are far more persuasive than reputation in a why-UAB answer.

Research and advanced education

UAB runs graduate and residency programs and an active research enterprise. If research is part of your story, find the specific area or program you would want to engage with.

Selectivity in context

Around 1,400 applications for roughly 84 seats, with an average admitted GPA near 3.78 and a DAT academic average near 21. Knowing where you sit helps you decide what the interview needs to add to your file.
